President, UST Conservatory of Music Alumni Association, Inc.

January 2022 – December 2024

Popularly known as “Mr. Chewy” of the UST Conservatory of Music, Antonio A. Chua-So Jr. began his first formal piano lessons at age 9 under the late Ms. Cecilia Monakil. The lessons awakened his innate love for music, hopeful of someday getting a music degree in college.  Alongside of this is also his dream of becoming a pilot. Obviously, music served as his ultimate force.

Antonio was accepted to enroll at UST Conservatory of Music. His reputable piano mentors include Leonor Kilayko, the late Nilda Redoblado, Najib Ismail, and Milagros Reyes. In 1991, he was elected President of the freshmen batch. He was then very active in supporting the endeavors of both the student council and that of the Conservatory. A self-supporting student, Mr. Chewy triumphantly surpassed life’s struggles.  His father died when he was still in college which compelled him to temporarily stop his studies and began working.

In 2002, he continued his formal studies again in UST. In March 2004, Antonio graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Music in Music Education.  Immediately right after this, he was given the opportunity with the commendations of Dean Raul M. Sunico and Father Regent Jose Ma. B. Tinoko, to be the exclusive concessionaire of the Conservatory of Music. Mr. Chewy’s canteen opened and offered affordable, clean and convenient snacks and refreshments to both students and faculty from 2004 up to 2007.

His career primarily revolves around teaching music. Some of the well-known institutions in the Philippines where he shared his expertise were Trebel Music School, Yamaha School of Music, Lyric Institute for Music and Related Arts, YMCA Chinatown, Makati Hope Christian School and Assumption College San Lorenzo Village Makati. He also served as Music Education Officer for four years in Cristofori Music School Singapore from 2011 to 2015. Antonio was chosen as Best Contemporary Male Vocalist during the Cristofori Annual Live House held at the Marina Bay NTUC Auditorium on January 5, 2012. CRISTOFORI MUSIC is Singapore’s largest music school and the biggest brand of musical instruments. As a singer-actor in musical theater, he had wonderful collaborations with Trumpets, Repertory Philippines, Makati Hope Christian School, and National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

At present, he works in the Department of Education as music educator at Manila Science High School since June 2019. Antonio is at the same time the Music Director/Adviser of Manila Science High School Glockenspiel and Drum Line Ensemble. Member (lifetime) of Piano Teachers’ Guild of the Philippines (PTGP) and Philippine Society for Music Education (PSME).
